Whether you believe it or not, pregnancy can have a toll on your oral health, which is why it is extremely important to do everything you can to take care of your smile each day. So, to help you do so, our team at Thomas Karagianis recommends that you do the following five things for a successful oral health and pregnancy:

Keep up on oral hygiene
Oral hygiene is vital. So, when you brush, floss, and rinse each day. Use dental tools that will deeply clean your smile all while caring for your teeth and gums.

Talk to your dentist
When you come in for your dental cleaning and exam, make sure you tell our team that you are pregnant. Then, we can treat your smile accordingly and we can look for any oral health issues that come along with pregnancy. Also, please remember to tell us about any medications you are taking.

Watch for changes in the mouth
Do your best to watch out for any changes in your mouth, like red, swollen, or bleeding gums. We also encourage you to look out for red, raspberry-like sores that are extremely tender. These are signs of both pregnancy gingivitis and pregnancy tumors. If you see these signs, call our office and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Have a healthy diet
Do your best to eat healthy foods and to incorporate more nutrients into your diet, like vitamins A, C, and D as well as protein, calcium, and phosphorus. We also ask that you avoid snacking all day and you try to eat more fruits, vegetables, cheese, and yogurt.

Deal with morning sickness
If you frequently throw up, your teeth are constantly exposed to the acid that can destroy them. So, please rinse your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda and water to keep the acid from attacking your smile.

If you do these five things, you are on the right track to a pristine oral health while you grow the little bun in your oven! For more information and tips, please feel free to call our office by dialing (630) 655-0724 and scheduling an appointment with Dr. Thomas Karagianis. We look forward to hearing from you!
